Welsh Pronunciation

Status:Active, open to new members
When: On Thursday afternoons 2:30 pm-3:30 pm

This Special Interest Group was suggested by John Tyler. John joined Brecon u3a in January 2023 and has lived in the Struet in Brecon since June 2014. He was born in Hackney (East London), went to School in North Kent, and worked for 40 years in Oxfordshire. He is the current Chair of Brecon u3a and has recently learnt to say "Good Morning Everyone" in Welsh when introducing the morning programme in the Studio! He would like to say and understand more but he is realistic enough to know that he is too old to learn to speak Welsh. Instead, he would like to understand how to pronounce place names so that he could follow directions without getting lost!

The objective of the "Welsh Pronunciation SIG" is to provide John and other non Welsh speakers in Brecon u3a with guidance on the rules for pronouncing Welsh place names and perhaps mountain/hill names and even common traffic signs. John has identified several Welsh speakers who have offered to contribute to the SIG by demonstrating the way they would pronounce various words and names and give explanations of their meaning. Participants in the SIG would be expected to join in by attempting to repeat the pronunciations. Depending on the number of people attending the SIG, we will explore the best way of maximising the learning opportunity while keeping the process informal and FUN.

Our second meeting is on 4th June again at 2.30 in the Studio.

Diolch yn fawr
