Our 40th Anniversary

In the Summer of 1983, Dr. Rosemary Maling called a public meeting in Brecon for like-minded people to consider developing a University of the Third Age. The aim was to offer to retired people, educational opportunities they had previously been denied. Some twelve recently retired people from all walks of life, responded offering their time and expertise in a range of subjects ranging from Arts and Science to Philosophy and Hill-Walking. Weekly meetings were arranged.

By October 1984 Brecon U3A was registered with the Third Age Trust as a self-organising, self-funding, independent local charity.

Early meetings were held at Brecon Museum. As the group grew, later venues included The Teachers' Centre at Coleg Howell Harris, The Deanery at Brecon Cathedral and the Subud Centre, with annual general meetings held at Treberfydd House. As membership continued to grow, Brecon U3A finally moved to its present location at Theatr Brycheiniog, in a scenic location alongside the canal.

Brecon u3a now organises weekly Thursday morning presentations, during school term time, on a range of diverse topics (see our Forward Programme for Examples). In addition, leaders of our Special Interest Groups organise two or three meetings of their groups each term on Thursday afternoons in the Theatr while physical activity groups meet on other days at various locations.

Brecon u3a has also organised a range of Study Trips (now called visits) to places in the UK and abroad.
